Description
The Portable Cow is an international, transdisciplinary project involving scholars from France, the United Kingdom, and Iowa. The Portable Cow project seeks to employ posthumanist perspectives to deepen understanding of the lived experiences of nonhuman animals, especially farmed animals; and to reexamine human-animal relationships in farming contexts. The project incorporates approaches from the arts, humanities, and social sciences to consider farmer-cow relationships through historical, ethnographic and creative lenses. The Portable Cow Symposium will bring the project to the United States for the first time, convening the collaborators at Iowa State University. Through events including an art exhibition, a symposium and panel discussion, and a series of interactive public workshops, the symposium aims to engage the ISU and greater Ames communities in conversation around topics related to human-animal relationships and the experiences of nonhuman animals. Subsequent to the symposium, the collaborators will produce a peer-reviewed, open-access publication to ensure the results of the symposium remain broadly accessible to the university community and the broader public.
