Dr Gail Millin-Chalabi, researcher at the University of Manchester, said: "The weather conditions have been unprecedented for this time of year if we look at what is happening in Greater Manchester. 

"We have had a month of very hot sunny weather, temperatures around 24C and higher. It peaked at 30C on Tuesday.

"We have had hotter days in the past but the consistency of these hot spells is different.

"When you have a wildfire, within a few days you get a downpour of rain.
