Grant Collier

I am currently engaged on a collaborative PhD project with the National Trust: "A Social History of the Styal Estate." As well as producing a thesis detailing the lived experience of Styal residents, I work with the National Trust (which runs the estate as a leisure and heritage site) in order to help guide their interpretation work as part of a transformative 'Quarry Bank Project'.

Alongside this work, I hold a position as a Senior Heritage Guide, managing a small team of highly-skilled guides who engage staff, students, alumni and members of the public in the history of the University of Manchester through dynamic walking tours. As well as managing this team, I lead bespoke and internal tours for university alumni and guests.

I studied my undergraduate MA in History at the University of Aberdeen from 2009-2013, gaining a first class grade with honours and winning the Forbes Medal in History for best performance in mandatory examinations.

From 2014-2016, I accepted a part-scholarship and studied a part-time postgraduate Masters in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Manchester, balancing postgraduate study with part time work and obtaining a distinction.

In 2016, I secured full funding from the ESRC for my current work, "A Social History of the Styal Estate," and I began this project during September of that year. I expect my thesis to be completed in September 2019.

Social and cultural history of technology, social history, gender studies, North West industrial history and heritage, 18th and 19th century British history.

Whilst studying for my MSc at Manchester, I lectured for an adult education class on the social, cultural and economic impacts of steam power in the nineteenth century. I am currently operating as a Teaching Assistant at Manchester University leading seminars for undergraduate students in a level 1 course, 'Capitalism in Historical Perspective'.
