Personal profile

Biography

Gwen is a Lecturer in Medical Education at the University of Manchester. Gwen primarily lectures in Anatomy on the Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) pathway to MBChB and the MSc PA programme.

Her scholarship interests are in assessment development, which aligns with her position as Academic Lead for GEM Assessment.

Gwen graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2018 with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, and alongside her teaching and scholarship roles, she continues to oversee research in the field of orthopaedics.

In 2022, Gwen was awarded the ON/ICRS Orthoregeneration Research Fellowship for her biomechanical research in orthopaedics. Gwen holds a Research Fellowship with Orthopaedic Research UK and the British Association for Surgery of the Knee.

Qualifications

BSc (Hons), MRes, PhD, PG Cert RPD, FHEA

Teaching

In the academic year 2025-2026, Gwen is teaching on the following courses:

Graduate Entry Medicine MBChB - Problem Based Learning & Anatomy

Physician Assistant Studies MSc - Anatomy

Human Anatomy & Histology BSc - Anatomy

She also delivers lectures on the 5-way pathway to MBChB and on the International Foundation pathway to MBChB.

Research interests

Gwen's research focuses on the biomechanical and clinical assessment of the knee following trauma and in arthritis. She is also interested in the ways in which treatments for chondral/osteochondral injury and osteoarthritis affect the knee joint's biomechanics and general mobility. Her current research is investigating the biomechanical outcomes of autologous chondrocyte implantation.

Methodological knowledge

Gwen's methodological knowledge include, but are not limited to, the biomechanical assessment of human movement with 3D motion capture- and gait assessment-systems, the subjective and objective assessment and reporting of knee function, the programming of bespoke biomechanical models and post-processing of complex biomechanical data in MATLAB and Lua languages, and the use of statistical packages (SPSS, GraphPad Prism, and Minitab) for the analysis of biomechanical and clinical data.
