Personal profile

Overview

Dr Hannah Serrage is a lecturer in Healthcare Sciences at the University of Manchester, specialising in Microbiology. Her research interests span the microbiome, both in skin and oral environments, photobiology and host immunology. She teaches primarily on the MSc Medical Microbiology programme at UoM, and is unit lead for Understanding Infection and co-lead for Practical Microbiology. Delivering content on how microbes that reside upon and around us interact with us, and applying this to diagnostic and research laboratory techniques to culture, detect and identify microbes implicated in both health and disease. She also contributes to teaching on foundation MBChB, MBChB and MSc Clinical Immunology

She is passionate about the delivery of engaging and innovative learning content, exploiting online resources to deliver interactive teaching. This has resulted in the incorporation of team based learning (TBL) in the MSc Medical Microbiology programme and her appointment as TBL captain for Year 2, Semester 4, MBChB.

Hannah actively engages with the wider community through participation in British Science Week, Universally Manchester Festival and Pint of Science events. Developing activites and presentations that discuss the importance of microbiology in society and common misconceptions in science.

She also continues to foster collaborations with the University of Strathclyde through development of novel photonic materials to reliably detect and disinfect microbial communities that colonise chronic non-healing wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers (EPSRC). She actively engages with the wider microbiology community through membership with both Microbiology Society and Applied Microbiology International.
