Hannah Wilkinson

I am a Lecturer in Educational Psychology within the Manchester Institute of Education. I am the Programme Director for the BSc Educational Psychology Programme.

My research interests centre around understanding psychological predictors of achievement, with particular interest in what motivates and engages students, and the impact of social processes within the classroom. My doctoral research focused upon re-evaluating teachers’ use of test-taking practices from a psychological lens; unpicking how students appraised these types of communications and how it affects their engagement in the classroom. My interest in psychometrics was utilised to devise a way to measure this within the classroom setting.  

I’m part of the Education and Psychology research group at the Manchester Institute of Education, most notably involved within the Assessment Experience special interest group.

I am an advisory editor for the British Journal of Educational Psychology. I am a chartered member of the British Psychology Society and have been a committee member of the BPS Psychology of Education Section since 2019. I have a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

My research interests include:

• The intrapersonal and interpersonal factors affecting student motivation and engagement
• The nature of high-stakes exams and how this impacts teachers, students and the classroom environment
• Teacher communications preceding high stakes exams and students’ appraisal of these communications
• The impact of social processes in the classroom, such as teacher-student relationships
• Psychometrics

I teach on the BSc (Hons) Educational Psychology, within the Manchester Institiute of Education at the University of Manchester. I am a Unit Lead for the Development and Childhood and Research Issues in Psychology and Education modules.
