Jan Hansel is an NIHR Doctoral Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine at The University of Manchester with an honorary contract at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. His research focuses on precision methods in sepsis antimicrobial therapy and airway management.
He graduated from The University of Maribor in 2015 and pursued clinical training in emergency medicine in Reykjavík, Iceland. In 2019 he commenced anaesthetics training in the North West of England, and is currently a dual trainee in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics. He completed an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in 2024. He was awarded an externally funded PhD fellowship through the NIHR's Doctoral Fellowship programme to investigate the interaction between sepsis phenotypes and antimicrobial pharmacokinetics in critically ill patients.
He has published over 45 peer-reviewed publications and has an H-index of 12 on Google Scholar. He was the principal author of an impactful Cochrane systematic review looking at devices used for tracheal intubation in adults in 2022, which has informed multiple clinical practice guidelines. He is a member of the steering committee for the Airway Terminology and Outcome Measures group, which is funded by the Association of Anaesthetists through the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia. He is a regular peer reviewer for CHEST, Cochrane, BJA, JICS, BMJ Open, BMC Medical Education and Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical Care. He is actively involved in the Trainee Research in Intensive Care (TRIC) network in the UK, and has helped deliver a number of multicentre projects.
He was the principal investigator of the TDM-TIME Study, looking at timing of therapeutic drug monitoring of beta-lactam antimicrobials in critical care, for which he has received a New Investigator Award from the Intensive Care Society. Currently, he is the Chief Investigator of the SIPRES Study, sponsored by The University of Manchester and funded by an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship, which is due to start recruitment at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in 2025.
