I have participated on Teaching assistant duties in regarding Lab demonstration and Workshops for 1st year students as well as Language Tutorials for 2nd year students. Some activities I have experience with include the following.
LABORATORY DEMOSTRATION:
Being in charge of teaching theoretical concepts of physical phenomena to be tested by the students. Providing advice and assistance in regards of errors and measurements as well as explaining and guiding students as they perform experiments in a laboratory during the year. Assessing their ongoing experimental skills and evaluating their final written reports.
WORKSHOPS:
Being in charge (along with other two Teaching Assistants and Academic members of Staff) of up to 80 students that are solving their worksheets with content related to Mathematics, Dynamics, and Electromagnetism for the respective modules in Year 1. The main activity is helping the students understand theoretical concepts useful to solve/practice their knowledge on the mentioned subjects. by giving them on-site-personal feedback.
LANGUAGE TUTORIALS:
As a language tutor I have overseen groups of up to 4 students where I discuss/teach physics topics in Spanish to prepare them for their year abroad in Spanish-speaking countries.
I am intrested in Solid State experimental physics. Part of my interests lies in Spintronics, 2D materials and their potential applications. Particularly in topics related to Graphene focused on Spintronics and Thermoelectric applications, with work done on spin and charge transport, spin anisotropy, and thermoelectricity on 2D systems made of Gr (with and without chemical functionalization), hBN, and ferromagnetic materials on SiO2 substrates.
I am also interested in applying 2D materials technology towards energy efficiency efforts such as battery storage and renewable energy.
I studied my bachelor’s degree in Physics at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico and at the University of Birmingham, UK. Then joined a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Manchester, UK. I started a PhD in the same topic also at the University of Manchester.
Currently I am employed at the University of Manchester as a Laboratory Technician ensuring the proper operation of a laboratory dedicated for teaching, particularly at the last year of the undergraduate course for physics students. Regular actions include, preparing chemical solutions for a multitude of experiments, ensuring the lab is up to date in Health & Safety, repairing electronics equipment, designing news parts for experiments as well as procurement of new equipment and admin activities.
As outreach activities and participation to disseminate work outside the University of Manchester, I have participated in:
- University of Manchester NANO-Master Class in 2018, showcasing laboratories and graphene concepts and applications in the Physics building to underage students.
- Winter Graphene Study in Feb 2019.
- 65th Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM2020) conference.
