Lidia Yanez Lagos

I am a sociologist, feminist, and activist researcher passionate about the transformative potential of collective action. I hold a BA in Sociology from the University of Chile (Santiago) and an MSc in Sociological Research from the University of Manchester, where I am currently pursuing a PhD in Sociology.

My research explores the political agency of social movements in the Global South, with a particular focus on how activists and demonstrators resist state violence and police repression from an intersectional perspective. I am especially interested in how memory, trauma, and embodied experience shape resistance. My doctoral project investigates the recursive relationship between memory and repression in the Chilean social uprising known as Chile Despertó, under the supervision of Dr Simin Fadaee and Dr Nick Crossley.

I believe that sociology must serve the pursuit of social justice while upholding the highest standards of scientific rigour. I am committed to producing politically engaged and methodologically robust research that contributes to both academic debates and grassroots struggles.

Over the years, I have participated in multiple collaborative projects—coordinating research teams, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, and organising academic and activist-oriented conferences and seminars. I currently work as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Manchester and serve on the organising committee of the Alternative Futures and Popular Protest conference.

Sociology is not just a discipline for me—it is my passion, and a powerful tool for critical inquiry, collective memory, and transformative social change.
