Personal profile

Overview

I am a Lecturer in Global Health Research, specialising in reducing health inequalities among ethnically minoritised women. My work focuses on improving access to health and social care services by leveraging the social networks and support structures of voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations, with a particular focus on domestic abuse support. My research aligns with SDG 10, which aims to reduce inequalities within and among countries.

I am leading a research programme that explores the role of faith-based organisations as a bridge to early presentation to mental health services for women, especially ethnic minority women living in high-income countries. I am also keen to ensure we improve women's participation in health research and generate real-world evidence.

My research interests also explore how the strengths of voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise (VCFSE) can be used to address health inequalities across several health and social care issues, including Breast cancer.

Since 2012, my research focus has aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG-5) on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, SDG 3 on Universal Access to healthcare globally, and SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities.

I continue to undertake community-based action research, with the aim of generating evidence that will practically influence policy and practice and improve health outcomes for women from ethnic minority and immigrant groups in the UK and globally across various health issues.

I accept PhD students and welcome enquiries from people working in similar interests.

Research interests

I am primarily a global health researcher with a background in public health education and promotion and social statistics. My research interests span a range of public health issues, ultimately focusing on improving women's access to mental health and social care services.

I am keen to enhance the use of health services by people from immigrant populations by working with VCFSE organisations, healthcare professionals and service user groups to improve care pathways. Findings from my research continue to highlight a significant need for collaborative work between statutory service providers, commissioners, and VCFSE organisations.

I am also keen to explore the link between workplace corporate social responsibility agenda and its link to health and wellbeing. Specifically, I am interested in understanding the role of faith as a social determinant of health and productivity.
