Personal profile

Overview

I hold a PhD in chemical engineering and analytical science – fuel cell from the University of Manchester, completed under the supervision of Professor Stuart Holmes, with a multidisciplinary background spanning academic research, technical facility support, and university-level teaching. I have developed a strong foundation in advanced materials science, vacuum systems and thin film technology. Over the past several years, I have gained significant experience through my work at the Henry Royce Institute, where I was actively involved in the operation, maintenance and user training of cutting-edge equipment for thin film deposition and materials characterisation. My skill set includes physical vapour vapour depostion PVD, aerosol deposition, surface treatment and analysis. In addition to technical proficiency, I bring strong project coordination, collaborative research, and supervision skills, having supported undergraduate, MSc and PhD-level projects. My work bridges research and education, with a strong emphasis on hand-on training, research support and interdisciplinary cooperation.

Biography

I currently serve as a research technician specialist at the Henry Royce Institution, affiliated with the University of Manchester. In this role, I provide analytical and technical support for a wide range of surface characterisation methods. I also actively contributed to collaborative projects in surface coatings, micro-calorimetry, and advanced deposition techniques. Prior to this, I earned a PhD in chemical engineering and analytical science from Manchester University, where my research focused on membrane-based materials for fuel cells. This academic training has been a cornerstone of my career, allowing me to work at the nexus of materials science, clean energy and sustainability. My early professional experience in the Middle East provided a strong academic foundation that complements my research journey.

Research interests

My research interests lie in the advancement of material technology for clean energy and coating. these including:

  1. hydrogen storage (fuel cell)
  2. functional surface coatings for corrosion protection
  3. thermo-analysis
  4. nano- and micro-indentation mechanical test
  5. membrane and porous materials for filtration and fuel cells.

Teaching

I have 15 years of teaching experience, spanning undergraduate, postgraduate and technical training. In Iraq, I taught for 10 years at Koya and Salahadiin universities. delivering core chemical engineering modules and supervising student projects. In the UK, I served 5 years as a GTA within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science at the University of Manchester, supporting laboratory classes and tutorials and coursework assessment for different modules. Currently, 3 years helping to develop practical research skills for users in extreme demand and environments – surface and coating.
