Robert Richardson

Dr Rob Richardson is a Lecturer in Urban Planning & Placemaking at the University of Manchester. His research is primarily concerned with how planning and public policy can shape urban design quality, including in the development of housing and public spaces. He is also interested in different understandings of 'placemaking' and 'place', and their relationship to governance and policy. 

He currently convenes course units on Placemaking (PLAN10632), International Urban Design (PLAN60491), and the Urban Design & International Planning (UDIP) Study Tour (PLAN60882), and has previously taught across postgraduate and undergraduate planning, urban design, and public policy.

He has previously held research posts at the University of Glasgow Centre for Public Policy, where he worked as part of the International Public Policy Observatory, and the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research. He completed a collaborative PhD with a Scottish local authority, studying the local implementation of Scottish Government placemaking policy, at the University of Glasgow. 

Rob is a licentiate member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and is on the RTPI North West Regional Activities Committee. He is also a member of the Regional Studies Association, and the Urban Design Group.
