I specialise in teaching Arabic literary and cultural Studies,Translation Studies, in particular intersectional approaches to feminist translation in contexts of creative production of the Middle East North Africa (MENA). I work with organisations, educational, health and cultural, that create platforms of expression for under-represented groups. My work in Translation Studies and MENA literatures was inspired by community work in the UK and living in the Middle East.
My most recent monograph Reading Iraqi women's novels in English translation: Iraqi Women's Stories (2021) focuses on how stories by Iraqi women creatives were mediated in Arabic-English translation, using perspectives of feminist paratranslation (Abou Rached 2017).
In my current research, Landscapes of Future Memory: creatives of Middle East North Africa (MENA), I explore, using similar analytical perspectives and the concept of 'au/their/ship' (Abou Rached 2023) how literatures by MENA creatives are moving across different language and translation pathways from public literary spaces which may be literally disappearing or risk being overlooked or forgotten.
My research interests include Iraqi and Arab women’s writing, Palestinian, MENA and other exilic literatures, postcolonial literary studies and developing intersectional feminist translation theories in new contexts.
I am co-editor for New Voices in Translation Studies, which is sponsored by International Association of Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS)/Chula University, Thailand. This is a double peer-reviewed online journal which platforms the scholarship of early career researchers.
