Abstract
Safe school stimulates social growth, builds confidence, and promotes understanding in children.
Objective: To examine safe school perception pattern of the students in high school.
Method: 190 high school students (boys=71; girls=119) participated into this study. 34-items Safe School Questionnaire (Jimerson & Furlong, 2006) with 5-point rating categories was translated into Bengali and retranslated into English. Finally, the Bengali version questionnaire measuring 4-subscales namely, connection/climate (α=0.79), incivility and disruption (α= 0.41), personal safety (α=0.54) and delinquency (α=0.47) was administered.
Results: Results revealed that no significant mean differences were found in safe school perception by gender & socio-economic status. Almost 75% of the students perceived that the teacher student relation in the school as cordial and trustworthy. On the other hand, 70% of them felt less safe with respect to personal safety, 55% and 60% of the students perceived the presence of uncivil and delinquent behaviour in school respectively.
Conclusion: Safe school perception is multidimensional in nature. The current Bengali version questionnaire for measuring safe school perception is effective for research due to its high internal consistency and ability to explore individual difference in response pattern.
