Abstract

Objectives
Multiple cancers types have high mortality and afflict individuals at a relatively young age, leading to substantial productivity losses and premature death. This study aims to provide a perspective on cancer mortality burden and productive life lost due to particular cancer types in Algeria.

Methods
Human capital approach (HCA) was used to estimate years of life lost (YLL) and present value of future loss of productivity (PVFLP). Age and sex-specific mortality data were sourced from the World Health Organization (WHO). The analysis estimated YLL burden, a time-based measure providing information on life lost due to premature mortality. Years of productive life lost (YPLL) is an estimate of the years lost before retirement age (female 55/male 60 years) if a person died prematurely. YPLL is a key component of the global cancer burden.

Results
30,348 patients died of cancer in Algeria in 2019. Lung, breast, bladder, cervical and head and neck cancer, are amongst the cancers with the highest mortality with an estimated number of 3,931; 3,465; 1,423; 1,088 and 695 deaths in 2019, respectively. We estimated that all cancer deaths resulted in overall 507,094 YLL, with breast accounting for 84,474 lung for 50,824 cervical for 19,711 bladder for 12,765 and head and neck cancer for 12,149 YLL in 2019. Annual PVFLP was estimated to be $177,563,840 for all cancer types, with breast accounting for $30,991,073 lung for $15,633,664 head and neck for $5,148,722 cervical for $4,480,723 and bladder cancer for $2,939,598 respectively.

Conclusions
The societal burden, YLL and PVFLP due to premature cancer mortality in Algeria are substantial, with lung, breast, bladder, cervical and head and neck cancer having a major impact. Continuing prioritization investment in cancer care including awareness, prevention, early detection and treatment is imperative and should take priority to reduce societal burden for the Algerian society.
