Abstract
Active learning is widely recognized for its ability to engage students, promote deeper understanding, and enhance critical thinking skills. However, in recent years, more and more international students have been coming to the UK for their higher education. They often face unique challenges in fully participating due to language barriers, cultural differences, and unfamiliarity with interactive learning methods. These obstacles can lead to increased stress and reduced engagement, limiting the effectiveness of active learning for this group.
This presentation will focus on the specific challenges international students face during active learning, particularly language barriers, cultural differences, and discomfort with interactive learning methods. These challenges can hinder their participation, increase stress, and reduce the benefits of active learning. To address these issues, rather than solely presenting strategies, this presentation will encourage discussion in identifying effective solutions through shared experiences and collaborative dialogue. Attendees will explore practical ways to mitigate language-related anxiety, enhance cultural inclusivity, and ensure equitable participation.
During this interactive session, educators have the opportunity to reflect on their own teaching practices, exchange insights with peers, and co-develop strategies to create a more welcoming and supportive active learning environment. The goal is to ensure that international students not only adapt but thrive in active learning settings, allowing them to fully engage both intellectually and emotionally.
