Abstract
This essay aims to analyze the tension between institutions and the mass movement based on the case of the Chile woke up movement, which developed from October 2019 to March 2020. To do so, it begins with a reading of the Chilean post-transitional context and the reemergence of social movements in this framework. Subsequently, it delves into the development of two of the most important movements in recent decades, giving an account of their tensions with the institutional: the student and feminist movements. In a following section, it explores the emergence of the Chile woke up movement and its characteristics, trying to reveal the reasons for its massiveness and the role of people who are not politicized or organized in it. The text ends with some comments on the recent results of the constituent process undertaken as a consequence of these protests, revealing some keys to analyze the possibilities and limits of institutions to give way to the demands of the mass movement.
