Abstract

Wildfires damage ecosystems and cultural landscapes. Severe wildfires are common on UK heathlands and moorlands, especially in drought years. Fire is also used as a traditional management tool to maintain UK moorland landscapes. The chapter reviews the wildfire problem in UK moorlands and heaths using the Peak District National Park as a detailed case study on the timing and spatial distribution of wildfire occurence. The implications of climate change for wildfire incidence is considered.
