The READY study (Recording Emerging Adulthood in Deaf Youth) is a 5-year prospective longitudinal study of deaf young people’s transitions to adulthood. The baseline cohort consists of 155 deaf young people living in the UK and aged 15 to 19 years old at point of enrolment. Methods comprise an annual life survey, standardised assessments of health (EQ-5D-5L), subjective well-being (SWEMWBS) and self-determination (SDI:SR) and qualitative interviews. All instruments are available in several languages/ modalities /formats. While the first national lockdown forced the suspension of the initial recruitment stage in March 2020, these circumstances created a natural experimental condition. 92 participants completed the life survey and standardised assessments prior to the first national lockdown, with a further 63 completing them before the close of recruitment in June 2021. In this presentation, we report the preliminary results from the first two-years of this research project. First, we compare participants’ (N=155) general wellbeing, health and self-determination with the general population standards. Secondly, we compare the results between the pre- and post- lockdown enrolment samples on the same measures. Thirdly, we run a longitudinal analysis (N=63) in which we assess and trace the changes in participants’ answers during the second wave of data collection. Along with survey data, we have run in-depth interviews that provide an insightful qualitative dimension. Our methods have allowed us to begin to understand which demographic groups within d/Deaf communities face more challenges to their health and well-being, and the impact of the pandemic in their lives. Finally, we explore and discuss emerging protective factors. The study is funded by the National Deaf Children’s Society, UK.
