Abstract

This research project seeks to examine the perspective of managers regarding the challenges of utilising traditional performance management tools and practices within the competitive setting of the container shipping industry. The methodology involves a case study which adopts a qualitative approach to analysing the underrepresented perspective of the manager. A single, critical case, that of Container Shipping Line A, has been examined by employing the in-depth interview as the primary mode of analysis. Documentary evidence has also been collected and examined to supplement and corroborate findings from the in-depth interviews. The findings suggest a disconnect between traditional performance management practices, as espoused by the organisation, and the perception of managers with regards to what they believe is required to improve organisational performance. Consequently, managers describe a need to resort to various informal practices to generate required performance improvements. These informal practices involve improvising around the shortcomings of traditional performance management, particularly with regards to how it seeks to quantify and influence social aspects, in a manner that incorporates broader organisational concerns, those that extend beyond the traditional focus on the contribution of the individual. The research findings provide insight into the perceived challenges of utilising traditional performance management tools and practices within competitive and complex contexts, findings which become increasingly relevant given the emphasis of extant literature on the evolution of corporate conditions toward such environments.
