The Mass Spectrometry & Separations Facility (MS&SEP) is a core facility supporting research and teaching across the Faculty of Science and Engineering. In addition we support research from wider UoM researchers from the Faculty of Biology, Medicine & Health. We also support external collaborations and provide analytical services to external customers. We are a team of 13 research technical professionals and are sited across two sites; the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology & The Department of Chemistry.
We operate using a dual model: Service led or user led with training and support. Service led MS provisions are available primarily for routine accurate mass (ESI, APCI, ASAP), MALDI-MS, GC-MS and protein ID.
We also provide support, training and expertise across multiple application areas including; metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, native MS, intact protein analysis, quantitative- MS (with bespoke assay development), HDX-MS, DESI-MS (single point, imaging-MS and high throughput analysis) and MALDI-MS (single point and imaging-MS) and GC-MS (liquid injection/headspace; MSD & QTOF). We have a suite of instrumentation available to support this wide breadth of research.
Our separations capabilities include an established resource for HPLC and UPLC analysis with a range of detectors including DAD, RI, CAD, ELSD and fluorescence. We utilise reverse phase, HILIC, normal phase, SFC and chiral analysis. We have provisions for analytical, semi-prep and preparative scale with fraction collectors. We have provisions for GC-FID including methanizer and TCD for gas analysis and high-throughput analysis and ion chromatography.
