Biography

Amanda is  Professor of Plant Sciences at the University of Manchester. Following post-doctoral research at University of Lancaster, UK and University of Florida, USA on the impacts of air pollution and global climate change on crop plants and agricultural production, she joined University of Manchester in 1996.  From 2014-16 she was Associate Dean for Social Responsibility in the Faculty of Life Sciences. From 2017-2022 she was the Unverisity of Manchester academic lead for Environmental Sustainability. Her interests lay in the areas of environmental biology, tropical and urban ecology, biological impacts of climate change and pollution. She is a passionate about women in science and science communication. She works in Environmental education and conservation in South-East Asia and Latin America. 

She was a BBSRC schools champion for 10 years and has run many public and community engagement events.

 

Teaching

Amanda teaches in the areas of environmental biology, plant science and pollution studies contributing to first year practicals, 2nd and 3rd year lecture units, field courses and postgraduate courses including MSc Pollution and Environmental Control. Amanda also runs a 2nd year UG course on Tropical Ecology and Conservation in Costa Rica.
