Biography

Dr. Kali Katnam is Head of Postgraduate Research (PhD/EngD/MPhil) studies and Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering (Advanced Composite Materials/Structures) in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering.

He obtained his BEng degree in Civil Engineering (Andhra University, India) and MTech degree in Structural Engineering (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India). He completed his PhD in Structural Engineering from Ghent University, Belgium in 2007. He then joined University of Surrey as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow (2007-2009) and conducted research on ‘Fatigue and Fracture of Adhesively Bonded Composite Structures’ (in collaboration with Imperial College London, BAE Systems and Airbus UK). In 2009, he joined the Irish Centre for Composites Research (IComp, University of Limerick, Ireland) as a Research Fellow (2009-2013) and performed industry-oriented research (in collaboration with Henkel Adhesives and Bombardier UK) on ‘Structural Integrity of Composite Structural Assemblies and Repairs’.

His research interests are broadly in the area of polymer composite materials/structures, with an emphasis on experimental characterization and computational modelling of structural bonded joints, composite repairs, mutliscale toughened composite laminates, and nano/micro-toughened structural adhesives.
