Overview

Tom is the Senior Technical Operations Manager for the School of Education, Environment, and Development Laboratories at The University of Manchester. Tom has extensive responsibilities in the safe and efficient running of the laboratories and in ensuring a highly skilled and professional service in the laboratories. Tom's own specialisms are palaeoentomology, x-ray flourescence analysis of environmental samples, sample preparation, and statistical analytical methods. 

Biography

Tom studied Geography at The University of Manchester and subsequently completed a PhD (Physical Geography) at the University of Southampton on the Holocene palaeoenvironment of southernmost South America. Tom has always worked in technical roles, including extensive field and laboratory work.

  • tephrochronologies
  • metal pollution of soils
  • environmental carbon inventories
  • lacustrine stable isotopes
  • basic limnological methods inc. profiling
  • palynological methods
  • diatoms, macroinvertebrates and other freshwater biological methods
  • environmental microplastics
  • sediment descriptions

Office hours

The Geography Laboratories are open between 0930-1630 every weekday. Students do not need an appointment - just ring the bell! The laboratories are on the ground floor of the Arthur Lewis Building.
