Overview

Alexander G. Mathioudakis is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine, at the University of Manchester and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. His research focuses on Airway Diseases phenotypes and personalised medicine, as well as clinical research methodology and evidence based medicine.

He graduated from the Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece, 2011) and started his clinical training in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine in Health Education North West. He undertook a Fellowship in Guidelines Methodology at Cochrane Iberoamerica and NICE (European Respiratory Society-ERS, 2016), followed by an Academic Clinical Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manchester (NIHR, 2016-2018) a PhD Studentship by the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Reseach Centre (BRC, 2018-2022) and a NIHR Clinical Lectureship in Respiratory Medicine.

He has published over 135 peer review publications and has an h-index of 40 in Google Scholar. He has contributed to the development of the 2019 update of the British guideline on the management of asthma (SIGN/BTS, 2019) and of the ERS Guidelines on Sarcoidosis Management and of Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis. He is also involved in four methodological guidelines by GRADE on the conduct of systematic reviews (GRADE 17, 30, 35 & Developing urgent response recommendations). He has received research competitive funding from the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR - HTA programme), the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and for investigator initiated studies by Boehringer Ingelheim and the North West Lung Charity.

He is actively involved in the European Respiratory Society (ERS). He is currently the Chair of ERS Group 5.1 (Airway Pharmacology & Treatment) and he has previously served in various roles, including member of the Guidelines Working Group and Chair of ERS Task Forces. He has also served as a member of the British Thoracic Society Standards of Care Committee. He is also an Early Career Co-chair of the DisEntangling Chronic Obstructive pulmonary Disease Exacerbations: An international clinical trials NETwork (the DECODE-NET) and member of the Steering Committee of the Pediatric Asthma in Real Life (PeARL) think tank.

He periodically reviews grant proposals for various research boards, such as  the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR-UK), Health Research Board (HBR-Ireland), and the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

He is an Editor of the Cochrane Airways (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews), associate editor of Breathe (ERS) and Folia Medica and a member of the editorial board of Frontiers in Allergy and Archives of Hellenic Medicine. He regularly peer reviews manuscripts for the BMJ, ERJ, AJRCCM, Chest, Allergy and other leading journals.
